There’s so much to do on this new project, how will the team complete all the work? Will they have everything they need to reach the finish line? Adequate resources are the lifeline for successful project completion. Money is one resource that often garners attention, however there are additional resources that are just as critical. For example, space, labor, energy, materials, and equipment are resources that require attention from project teams.

Often overlooked, but equally as important, is the resource of time. Completing tasks, reviewing documents, and gathering feedback from citizens all take time. How team members manage their time is a reflection of how well other resources are managed. Here are some ways that project teams can try to make the most of their working hours, with links for additional insight:

Communicate early and often. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, request an extension, or admit when a mistake was made. Communicate right away so problems are limited further into the project lifecycle.
Review historical project documentation to learn how long tasks have taken previously, how long the review cycle was for documents, or how long stakeholder feedback was collected so accurate timelines can be created.
Spend more time in the planning phase of a project to save future headaches. Having a thorough project plan will reduce the amount of back tracking and rework that a team must complete.
Ensure team members understand the problem they are tasked with solving and the impact of their work. This provides a focus, and the work will be performed with purpose.

It often feels like there aren’t enough hours in the workday to complete the tasks that need to be accomplished. Working together as a team to efficiently use time helps to produce excellent work and a high-quality state government for Missouri citizens!
